Does Your Roof Need Ventilation?

Roof damage can be caused by many reasons. Debris, water damage, pests, and much more. Roofing ventilation is probably not an issue that crosses your mind every day. However, it is a major factor in the overall health of your roof and home. Having proper ventilation affects your comfort, your home’s well-being, and the average cost of potential repairs.

Understanding Attic Ventilation

In order to avoid roof damage, you will need proper ventilation. Good attic ventilation when your attic is unfinished will most likely require intake vents along with the soffits, and exhaust vents, at the peak of the roof. This allows for a circular flow of air, where different temperatures of air can fluidly migrate throughout the space.

Why Ventilation is Important for Avoiding Roof Damage

Effective ventilation is useful for removing excessive moisture that can cause attic or roof damage to your home. This heat and moisture can cause warping, bending, and other forms of damage.

When it is hot outside, without proper ventilation, heat will build up in the attic, and cause roofing shingles to warp, age, and fade, this can then radiate down into the floor, and increase your HVAC costs.

If temperatures drop below freezing the heat build-up in the attic due to the sun’s rays can cause the snow to melt, and water to seep into your roof. Since it is cold enough, the water can refreeze, and cause ice dams. These do immense damage to roofs, as they slowly push shingles apart, causing damage to your roof.

Even if it is not below freezing, the melting of snow, if present, can cause water damage. Which can cause fading of walls, and damage to hardwood floors and carpet.

Signs of improper ventilation

  • An unexplainable increase in your home’s energy bill.
  • More frequent HVAC repairs
  • Buildups of ice along the edge of your roof
  • Faded or warped shingles
  • Rusted metal materials in the attic such as electrical boxes, nail heads, and fixtures.
  • Water stains, or dampness on the inside of your roof sheathing.
